On Thursday, February 26th, we kicked off our 2025-2026 Youth Appreciation program by honoring students from five of the Programs of Study offered at Salem Keizer Career Technical Education Center (CTEC). Optimist club members, guests, CTEC faculty and of course the students enjoyed a great meal prepared by CTEC Culinary Arts Students, and got to hear about and from the students.
Below are synopses of each student.
Achievement in Aviation
Aleena is a senior who splits her classroom time between McKay High School and CTEC. Her aviation instructor described Aleena as someone that exemplifies leadership, character and commitment in everything she does. She dependable, always positive, well-respected by her peers and creates a supportive environment for all those around her. Recently, she has been studying hard for the written exam required for earning a pilot’s license; she will sit for the exam in a few days. Aleena shared that as one of the few girls in the aviation program, she feels very lucky to be part of the program and praised the instructors for being accessible and helpful. She is also very involved in FFA (is currently president of the local chapter) and participates in 4H at the state fair.
Achievement in Culinary Arts
Miles is a senior from West Salem High School who has been part of the Culinary Arts program at CTEC for the past two years. His instructors praised his positive attitude and helpful nature, describing Mikes as someone who is never in a bad mood. He is also kind, inclusive, thoughtful, and always puts 100% into his efforts in the classroom. The instructors also remarked on how Mikes has grown in his overall confidence and his skills in working with others during his time in the program. Miles thanked the instructors and praised the program for changing who he is, adding that he has gained confidence and general professional skills. After high school, Miles is planning to go to college and is looking at starting this journey at Chemeketa Community College.
Video Game Design and Animation
Emily is a South Salem High School senior who has been in the Video and Game Design program at CTEC for the past two years. Out of all the creative and talented students in the Video and Game Design program, her instructor said that Emily stood out as a shining example of academic drive, positivity, leadership, and exceptional character. She is very thoughtful, positive, and humble. Emily’s dad shared that she had difficulties learning to speak as a child, making all that she has achieved even more inspirational. Emily shared that her goal is to always be optimistic and made sure to thank the CTEC staff for all their help.
Achievement in Criminal Justice
Olivia is a Junior at McNary High School who is in her first year at CTEC. Her instructor used lots of superlatives to describe Olivia. She always supports her classmates and teammates (on the basketball team). She is not only kind, but driven and hard-working. She approaches every situation with a positive mindset and an unwavering belief that even in the most challenging moments there is a silver lining. Her encouragement and support uplifts those around her, making others feel seen, valued, and capable. Olivia said she loves her instructors and all she is learning. They have inspired her to have the goal of one day becoming a detective.
Achievement in Cosmetology
Macey is a senior from West Salem High School who is in Cosmetology’s dual program (Aesthetics and Hair Design) and was a unanimous choice to receive this award. Her instructor described her as one of the hardest working students and said she is “nailing” the dual program despite the intense workload. She is always happy and is sweet and kind to everyone. Macey plays a key role in establishing a positive classroom environment, fostering a sense of cohesion amongst all the students. She is on track to obtain a license in both the dual fields of practice. Macey is grateful to be able to have these skills straight out of high school and is looking forward to entering the workforce and advancing her studies at Chemeketa Community College.
