The Optimist Club of Salem met with students, faculty and guests from North Salem and West Salem High Schools on April 9th to celebrate their students’ achievements. We enjoyed a wonderful meal at the Salem Keizer Career Technical Education Center (CTEC) and got to meet a group of amazing students.
Below are synopses of each student.
North Salem High School
All four North Salem High School Students selected for this award are more than just good students or talented performers. They have, each in their own way, made it a priority to encourage and elevate those around them.
Achievement in Science
Kassidie is a Senior who has fully embraced the IB (International Baccalaureate) focus on learning over grades, shifting from a results-driven mindset to a genuine love of understanding, proving that when mastery comes first, achievement naturally follows. She consistently asks insightful questions not only to deepen her own comprehension but also to help her classmates grasp difficult material, turning every class discussion into a shared learning opportunity. In doing so, she embodies the Optimist International mission by bringing out the best in herself and her peers, fostering hope and a positive vision of what a true learning community can be.
Next year Kassidie plans to attend Oregon State University to study Environmental Engineering.
Achievement in Science
Pedro is a Senior who was selected because of his ability to ‘Bring out the Best in Others’ by transforming his own struggle with difficult science concepts into a source of hope for his peers. While other students might focus solely on their own grades, Pedro actively encourages classmates to persevere, reminding them that understanding comes through effort and not to give up. By fostering resilience and a positive vision of what every student can achieve in science, he elevates the entire classroom community.
Following graduation, Pedro plans to attend the University of Oregon where he will most likely major in business.
Achievement in English Language Development
Maria exemplifies many qualities that make her not just an excellent student, but a great human being. Maria is highly accountable and holds herself to a high standard. She always pushes herself to be the best she can be, even when nobody is asking that of her or looking over her shoulder. She has a service mindset, volunteering regularly as a teacher’s aide/assistant at local elementary schools in Salem and using her free time and bilingual skills to represent our community. Maria's life experiences make her a source of great strength and empathy. Those around her feel lucky to know Maria and happy that she is there to share her gifts and energy with them!
Only a sophomore, Maria has two more years to continue being a role model and contributor to North Salem High School and her community.
Achievement in Performing Arts
Yara is a Senior and an exceptional student whose leadership and character make a lasting impact on everyone around her. As the Alto Section Leader in Nordic Choir, she leads with confidence, musicianship, and a strong sense of responsibility, consistently setting a positive example for her peers. Yara is also deeply involved in theater and is one of the Co-Presidents of North’s Thespian Honor Society. She brings a dynamic stage presence enhanced by her talent as a dancer. For three years in a row, Yara has earned the top score in Musical Theater Dance in the Thespian “Southern Regional” Competition and has showcased at the Oregon Thespian State Festival – a very high honor in High School Theater in Oregon. She is also an active participant in school leadership, where her voice is thoughtful and her actions are intentional. What truly sets Yara apart is her kindness and maturity. She is always willing to step in and help, often working behind the scenes to ensure success for the group as a whole. Recently, her talent, maturity, and work ethic made her the youngest dance choreographer Salem’s Pentacle Theater has hired. Her genuine care for others and steady reliability make her an invaluable member of any community she is part of.
Because of a conflicting competition, Yara was not able to join us at our luncheon. We congratulate her on her many accomplishments and wish her continued success following her graduation from High School.
West Salem High School
One of the most challenging and admirable accomplishments a student can achieve is to make a major shift in how they approach school. Whether it involves correcting bad behavior, improving attendance, or applying themselves academically, it takes effort and determination to turn bad habits into the positive ones that will put a student on the path to success and that is what all three West Salem High School honorees have done.
Outstanding Improvement in Attendance, Effort, and Attitude
Marcus is a junior who has made a great turn around. He has realized the importance of school and that showing up and doing the work to be successful in school will lead to success when he graduates. He loves football, which not only helps keep him connected but also gives him an opportunity to lift up his teammates with his energy and enthusiasm for the game. Marcus has worked with the behavior team to help turn his negative interactions into positive ones and has become someone West can look at as an example of how working hard, finding your place, and teaming up with staff that help support you, can make high school a fun, positive, and successful experience, not only for himself, but also for those around him.
Marcus thanked school staff for sticking with him through his tough spots and helping him realize the importance of school for his future. He is looking forward to his senior year of school including the opportunity to play another year of football. After graduation, he would like to work as a contractor.
Outstanding Improvement in Attendance, Effort, and Attitude
Elliot is a senior who gives more than he receives. His effort to give his best every day is something that rubs off on other students. From someone who wasn’t even thinking about graduating, Elliot has become a student who is now working with the graduation coach to help other seniors stay on track.
Elliot was not able to join us at our luncheon. We congratulate him and wish him continued success following graduation.
Outstanding Improvement in Attendance, Effort, and Attitude
Brooklyn is a junior who has been working hard all year to turn her high school experience from a negative one to a positive one. During her sophomore year, she was frequently in the Behavior Office because of her actions. That all changed this year and now her behavior and attendance serve as a role model and encouragement to other students.
Brooklyn was not able to join us at our luncheon. We congratulate her for the hard work she is putting in and wish her the best for her senior year and following graduation.
